Kidney stones (also called nephrolithiasis or renal calculi) are hard deposits that form within the kidneys.

Symptoms of kidney stones may develop, particularly as the stone moves through the ureters.


Kidney Stone Symptoms

Symptoms of kidney stones may include:

  • Flank or back pain

    • May radiate to the groin

    • Pain may be severe and come in waves (renal colic)

  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Pain with urination (dysuria)

  • Other urinary symptoms

    • Cloudy urine

    • Foul-smelling urine

    • Urinary frequency

    • Urinary urgency

  • Fever (especially if infection is present)
